Every year we are threatened to receive the worst winter in years, with temperatures set to drop to their lowest and blizzards suggested across the country. On many occasions it appears to have been a mistake, but on the year that the news does come true will you be prepared?
Even without the impending four-feet of snow and the icicles hanging from your roof, you can be sure to expect drops in temperatures that can feel somewhat uncomfortable, even when you are protected indoors. Stay warm this winter with our hints and tips to minimise the chill.
- Invest in homeware that is destined to keep cool drafts at bay. Draft excluders are quickly becoming a must-have product for the homeowner, and with so many varieties available during the winter months, you are sure to find one that matches your personality and style.
- Close curtains once the sun goes down. As soon as the winter sun vanishes from the sky the temperature will quickly follow. As the air cools outside, chances are so will the air within your property – unless you run your heating all day and night, which will quickly become expensive. Closing curtains will not only keep your home looking cozy but it will also work to shield your abode from the outdoor chill, banishing drafts and keeping the warm air away from the cold glass.
- Regulate the temperature of your home (and the cost while you’re at it) by having your heating system programmed to only fire up once your property drops below a predetermined temperature. By doing so, the property will remain at a comfortable temperature rather than spiking between hot and cold intervals.
- If you have fairly modern windows and doors installed within your property, you will find small air vents at the top of the frames – make sure these are closed when the temperature drops to ensure the cool air can’t sneak through.
- Improve the insulation in place within your loft. Overtime the insulation within your loft can get crushed by storage, working less effectively when it is needed. As we all know, heat rises; so all the warm air in your property is heading in one direction. Without adequate insulation in place, you may as well have an open-topped property. You will easily be able to find replacement insulation in many high street hardware stores. Commit yourself to a few hours of labor and you will quickly be reaping the benefits. Using your loft as storage space can damage the insulation you have installed, so while you’re at it why not look for some loft boarding too? Allowing your items to safely sit above the insulation in place.
